Latest Discoveries Feature a 500-Year-Old Skull Tower from the Aztec Culture

Jul 4, 2017 By Lori Martinez Leave a Comment

skulls

Archeologists might have just unearthed one of the most precious cultural landmarks of the past, namely Huey Tzompantli. This is a 200 feet long tower made of skulls that crowned Templo Mayor, a temple built for the god of the sun, war, and human sacrifice in the Aztec culture. The existence of such a ghoulish construction was just a local legend. However, now that scientists surfaced such a historical vestige, they have new questions regarding Aztec practices.

The Edifice of Aztec Culture Was Supposed to Be a Display of Power

A team of researchers at the National Institute of Anthropology and History started an ambitious project two years ago. They wanted to unearth ancient pieces from the Aztec era, so they dug near the Metropolitan Cathedral of Mexico City. Their discovery of the tower of skulls marks probably the most important one of its kind.

The creation of Huey Tzompantli was believed to be a display of power. Other cultures such as Toltec and Maya employed similar techniques. Their captured enemies became adornments for their racks. However, this discovery brought a peculiar aspect into light. Out of these thousands of skulls, there are many who pertained to women and children. This detail goes against the belief that Aztec people sacrificed only young male soldiers who battled them.

So far, archeologists uncovered around 650 skulls. However, they still have to dig further to uncover the entire base of the edifice. Therefore, they expect to come into contact with additional skulls and secrets.

Aztec Architecture Started Coming Back to Light on Its Own

The conquistadors were mainly at fault for the extinction of the Aztec society. Not only did they slaughter these populations with guns, but they also destroyed their architecture. The latter was not done just as a symbolic gesture, but it carried a practical significance as well.

Spaniards used the pre-Hispanic foundations to build their own cathedrals and churches. However, after so many centuries of silence, the lost cities started to come to light again due to earthquakes or new construction efforts.

Phil Donahue Identifies America’s Main Issue as Hypocrisy

Jun 26, 2017 By Lori Martinez Leave a Comment

phil donahue

The legendary host of Phil Donahue Show has some strong opinions about the current situation of the United States. Donahue was the very first talk show that employed audience participation. Since the, the concept proved to be successful and was adopted by many other famous productions. Donahue returned on TV as a commentator of the current situation in America. To him, the main issue with this national superpower is hypocrisy.

Phil Donahue Interpreted Trump’s Victory as a Result of a Prevailing Hypocrisy

Phil Donahue appeared during CNN broadcast to express his own ideas about the struggles his country has now to face. He did not avoid tackling difficult topics, exactly how he used to do during his own TV show that ended in 1996. This time, he talked about hypocrisy and how this national trait is dragging the country down.

“Hypocrisy is killing us.”

What Phil Donahue refers to is the presidential elections in 2016. He devoted the entire time on air to debate only Trump-related topics. For instance, he wondered how Trump’s constituents consisted of only a modest percentage of the country.

On the other hand, it was him who won the elections. Donahue answered his own question by categorizing the phenomenon as hypocrisy. He heard many people proud to be Americans, yet they didn’t take advantage of one of their basic rights, which is voting.

America’s Current Main Issue Was Born Due to Citizens Who Lost Hope

Moving on, Phil Donahue believes that those who voted with Donald Trump were those who ran out of patience. Most of them are citizens who are no longer satisfied with how America works. College loans are too high, few raises over the years yet a stranger person shows up in the papers as an overnight millionaire.

Therefore, they saw in Trump a chance of change. Moreover, Donahue addressed to the press as well. He wanted to see more in-depth documentaries on America’s current main issue and research people who voted for Trump and their reasoning behind their choice.

Lorde Used an Unfortunate Analogy to Describe Her Friendship with Taylor Swift

Jun 21, 2017 By Lori Martinez Leave a Comment

lorde

Lorde has been making her fans wait longer than it is now usual to release a new album. However, the artist explained that her musical history was built on her creative inspiration and not market request. Now that she is back on the front pages, the world was looking forward to learning more about her. That’s why maybe she let herself be seen more than people wanted. In a recent interview, she used an innocent yet unfortunate analogy to express how she sees her relationship with Taylor Swift.

Lorde Claimed the Title of a Complex Artist through Her New Album “Melodrama”

The New Zealand singer has just released her second album entitled “Melodrama.” The content propels her as an adult artist in the eyes of critics and fans. She showed that she could evolve as a professional singer by illustrating through lyrics and deep tunes the complex experiences that follow a difficult breakup. Although this theme has been an overused topic in the musical industry, Lorde managed to find a different angle to it which seems more genuine than other approaches.

Lorde Used an Unfortunate Analogy to Illustrate the Hardships Two Famous Artists Face Together

However, during a recent interview, the artist wanted people to know more about her personal self. This is why she accepted to answer questions about her popular relationship with Taylor Swift. To describe the intricacies of this part of her life, Lorde resorted to an unfortunate analogy. She described this particular relationship as if being a friend to a person with an autoimmune disease.

“There are certain places you can’t go together. Certain things you can’t do.”

It may sound like a cruel thing to say, yet the artist was just trying to find a simple way to explain a complex situation. Lorde was actually explaining how it is to go out with someone who is so popular. Even though the two women are sharing a wonderful relationship, they can’t enjoy certain experiences together when the fame kicked in.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix Receives Deadpool Producer at Its Helm

Jun 16, 2017 By Graziella Paone Leave a Comment

x-men cast

These past few days were full of news about one of the most exciting movie series in the Marvel Universe.  X-Men: Dark Phoenix is going to have Simon Kinberg as producer. With so many X-Men movies in his portfolio, it would have been difficult to find another professional so passionate about this mutant realm.

X-men: Dark Phoenix Will Take Place in 1991

There were more exciting details released that would surely satisfy the fans of the franchise. Michael Fassbender will resume its role as young Magneto who is still hanging at the border between good and evil. Moreover, James McAvoy is going to use his pure acting skills on rounding up, even more, the complex experience that made Charles Xavier the calm and beloved professor that was once portrayed by Patrick Stewart.

The upcoming 20th Century Fox’s X-Men has also announced the historical setting through which its main characters are going to develop their story. Dark Phoenix respects the chronology of the latest reboots to the mutant universe, so it is going to take place in the past. More exactly, the action will be set in the year of 1991.

Not that I’ll get credit for this. But #XMenDarkPhoenix aka TEEN SPIRIT is set in 1991.

— Christopher M (@_ChristopherM) June 14, 2017

Nonetheless, there were already some early hints that pointed in the right direction. Creators announced several beta titles before sticking with the present one. They hovered about suggestions such as Supernova and Teen Spirit. The latter choice is a recollection of an iconic track belonging to Nirvana, which is “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” Looking more into the background of this melancholic song we can see that it debuted in 1991.

Jessica Chastain Approached for Lilandra Role

Therefore, the setting is perfect to introduce a new character from American comic books into the movie dimension. This is about Lilandra Neramani, the Empress of Shi’ar Empire. This character has a key role in the Phoenix Saga and shares a marriage for a short period with Charles Xavier. At the moment, producers want Jessica Chastain to develop this important role.

Grammy Awards Goes with Online Voting Next Year for a Popularity Boost

Jun 15, 2017 By Jose Buttner Leave a Comment

gramys award

The traditional way in which members cast their votes for Grammy Awards relied on paper ballots. This might seem a romantic method through which to initiate another edition of Grammy Awards. In reality, it appears to be an outdated procedure that is not in tune with the show’s direction that mixes music with technology. Therefore, Recording Academy is going to allow members to vote online for the first time in the history of the event.

The Winners of Grammy Awards Will Be Decided Online

On Wednesday, Recording Academy executives announced the end of the paper ballots as a voting system during the annual review. Instead, they unveiled a brand new procedure based on a digital voting software. Through this upgrade, they hope to entice a larger array of members to participate at Grammy Awards. This method offers artists that are on the road during the event the possibility to still become an active part of it.

The senior vice president of awards at the Academy, Bill Freimuth, admitted that this had been a widely discussed proposition among executives for years. He claimed that it wasn’t a question of disbelief but a matter of technical challenges that delayed the system modernization.

“Security was always a major issue because it could become a target for hackers.”

Few Voters Took the Time to Vote for All 19 Grammy Categories

During this time, the Grammys attracted various criticism regarding the way it promotes voting practices. Over the years, juries chose traditionalism over the challenging yet marvelous work of artists with adventurous and experimental inclinations.

Grammys rules encourage members to choose their favorites from four main categories which are a new artist, song, album, and record. However, there are other 15 fields that need judges to decide the winner. Across the history of this event, few members cast more than 15 votes per year. This meant that some categories had to be discarded.

The Official Trailer for Game of Thrones Season 7 Is Out – Here’s What We Know

May 25, 2017 By Graziella Paone Leave a Comment

game of thrones concept art

After six seasons in which HBO has been teasing fans with the White Walker invasion and the Great Winter, finally, the great war is here. Judging from the official trailer that has flooded the internet, adding fuel to the fire in the hearts of GoT enthusiasts, things are getting darker, death is lurking, and Dany will finally take her rightful place on the Iron Throne. So get ready for the emotional rollercoaster Game of Thrones Season 7 promises to be.

Hear Me Roar

Cersei is now queen, and her scheming has reached maximum levels. The new and improved last female descended of the Lannister house sits on a giant map of Westeros, trying to come up with a strategy that will defend King’s Landing from the massive invasion knocking on her doorstep.

Cersei Lannister and Jamie Lannister sitting on Westeros map

“Enemies to the east, enemies to the west, enemies to the south, enemies to the north.”

Is there another enemy right by her side? Jamie surely didn’t look pleased at the end of last season when Cersei managed to kill off half the city, their last son losing his life in the process. Moreover, looking back at how Lord Frey departed the land of the living, multiple theories point to Cersei dying by the hands of Arya Stark disguised as Jamie Lannister. They did leave the Frey estate about the same time.

Fire and Blood

In the meantime, preparing to seize the Westerosi capital, Daenerys finally returns to her place of birth, Dragonstone. Ever since Robert’s Rebellion the place has been deserted, so one could say that Dany is taking small but sure steps to cement the Targaryen house’s claim on all Westeros.

For a brief moment, viewers were able to glimpse a heated, passionate kiss shared by Yara Greyjoy and Ellaria Sand. If what happened to Cersei’s prodigy serves any lesson, the odds are not in Yara’s favors if she doesn’t walk away from Ellaria asap.

Daenerys Targaryen sitting on Dragonstone throne

Dany returns to her birthplace, the Targaryen line back in the Game of Thrones.

Speaking of the Greyjoys, Theon’s short appearance in the trailer hints the Iron Islander has shed the persona of Reek. Unfortunately, a secondary character with such an impressive evolution on the show will most likely meet his end by the seventh episode.

Winter Is Coming

Last, but certainly not least, the Starks seem to dominate the show once again. In a twisted journey where the Lannisters died out one by one and the Starks, what’s left of them, became ever so strong, the final days of the war will certainly fall in the hands of a righteous Stark.

Arya makes brief appearances throughout the trailer, her journey pointing to a highly probable Stark reunion. Seeing as she has had no contact with any member of her family for a long time, the skilled assassin may be overjoyed at the thought of Jon Snow being the new King in the North.

Arya Stark riding horse

Arya’s journey may end where it first begun, in Winterfell.

Will Sansa let Baelish convince her to act against her half-brother? It seems Jon is already taking matter into his own hands, chocking Littlefinger in what might be one of the most satisfying scenes in the trailer.

The official trailer for Game of Thrones Season 7 ends with the wise words of the Onion Knight. A consistent source of wisdom throughout the series, Sir Davos does have a point,

“If we don’t put aside our enmities, we will die, and then it doesn’t matter whose skeleton sits on the Iron Throne.”

Did you enjoy the final version of the Game of Thrones Season 7 trailer? Please let us know if we missed any important hint presented in the short video.

Fox Teases Viewers with New Paranormal Show, Ghosted

May 22, 2017 By Jose Buttner 1 Comment

Adam Scott panel

Adam Scott will share the lead of Ghosted with Craig Robinson.

Fox is a veteran of the supernatural and paranormal, airing shows like The X-Files ever since 1993. Now, in a fit of nostalgia, the entertainment group has decided to revamp the theme of a paranormal seeking duo, only it replaced Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny with comedic legends, Craig Robinson and Adam Scott.

Judging from the trailer, the two are a perfect match. They may not have the chemistry of Agent Mulder and Scully, but again, Ghosted is not a drama, it’s a half an hour comedy show that must fit between The Simpsons and Family Guy, so there is no room for heartbreaking drama, just uninterrupted laughs.

Ghosted Follows the Story of Two Misfits

Craig Robinson plays Leroy Wright, a police officer and supernatural skeptic, or the Scully. On the other hand, there’s Max Jennifer (Adam Scott), the Mulder of the duo. From what the trailer lets us believe, Wright and Jennifer are abducted from their routine daily activities, Men in Black style, and introduced to the Bureau Underground, an organization that “investigates the paranormal and anything outside the scientific realm.”

Naturally, like any self-respecting comedy show, Ghosted seems riddled with stereotypical jests and situation comedy while the actors do everything in their power not to take themselves seriously. Currently, the success of the show is depending on Robinson and Scott’s chemistry and ability to make viewers laugh.

Fox Is Betting on Comedies This Fall

Seems Fox is going all in on comedies this fall, as the entertainment group is also going to air a Star Trek spoof, The Orville. Following the adventures of a second-grade starship captain played by non-other than Seth McFarlane (Family Guy) and an unconventional crew of humans and aliens, the show is already gathering a considerable fan base.

Rick and Morty Short Alien Covenant Promotion Video Is Better than the Movie

May 15, 2017 By Benjamin Teh Leave a Comment

Rick and Morty arguing

The highly anticipated sequel to Prometheus, Alien Covenant was released last Friday, disappointing the fans of the franchise who were expecting a little more than Ridley Scott managed to offer. Now, fans are saying that the short Rick and Morty promotional video was more intense than the actual movie as it actually featured a thrilling plot twist.

Rick’s Alcoholism Is Deadly to Face Huggers

In the short video, Rick and Morty are shown flying around in space, a big red HELP button pulsating like crazy on the dashboard. At first, the inventor/genius/grandfather chooses to ignore it, but his incarnated conscience, also known as his grandson Morty, pushes him into investigating the matter.

As soon as they reach the Covenant, a face hugger attacks Rick. To the alien creature’s misfortune, Rick’s body is filled with alcoholic and drug residue, killing the monster in a matter of minutes. The following conversation is a reverse lesson Rick and Morty style, the conclusion being that

“somebody [should] get a memo to all the characters in those Alien movies, stat!”

Although the video is 15 seconds short of a minute, it features intelligent conversations, canon aliens, and an unexpected plot twist. It’s more than some critics had to say about the recent xenomorph origin story.

Why Is Alien Covenant Such a Big Disappointment?

For the moment, we will not go into details as many fans are still waiting to see the movie and judge its quality by themselves. However, we will say this, for those who want a classic mix of female lead, scary monsters, and a bunch of gruesome deaths, Scott made an excellent movie. The fans that wanted something more, the spark that turned the initial franchise into such a roaring success, the movie is a disappointment.

Ah #AlienCovenant how to describe it.
Bloated, misguided, poorly developed, style over substance. Has so much potential to have been better pic.twitter.com/IYvOu23SGT

— The Ricky Collins (@RickySpurs101) May 12, 2017

Nevertheless, a good horror movie is hard to come by these days, so fans should at least sit back and enjoy watching the crew trying to escape a grizzly death at the hands of xenomorphs.
