Recent reports from scientists show the alarming rates at which climate change advances. One of its most visible effects is the rapid warming of waters in oceans and seas all across the world. As the process goes one, animal species are severely affected. According to a new study from experts, baby lobsters are the new victims of climate change.
Researchers at the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences and the University of Maine Darling Marine Center conducted a study on the situation of lobsters under the new climate conditions. It seems like baby lobsters are affected more than adults, as the oceans’ temperature is on the rise. This is bad news because the populations will be decreasing to the point of extinction.
Specialists were able to estimate these results based on their tests. They observed the behavior of baby lobsters in a human-controlled environment. What they did was to increase the water temperature by five degrees Fahrenheit to the standard level of the ocean water in the wild. This is how they noticed that baby lobsters find it difficult to survive in such hostile environment.
The decision to increase the water temperature by five degrees Fahrenheit was not randomly made. The scientists predict that climate change will warm the oceans’ water by five degrees in the next eighty years. The results also apply to the Gulf of Maine, located in New England, where lobsters can be found in large numbers.
One of the few positive results of warming water on lobsters is that they accelerate their development process. Researchers observed this effect with the three hundred baby lobsters they had raised. However, the adults didn’t have a long lifespan.
The news about the faith of lobsters is a concern not only for environmentalists but food industries as well. Lobster dishes are highly appreciated by customers, and seafood providers, as well as fishermen, are worried about the situation. This is another example of how climate change affects human activities. However, the industry is currently going through one of its most successful periods.
Except for documenting on the current status of lobster, the new study from experts has yet another aim. It is meant to draw the attention of both scientists and authorities about what is happening to the wildlife and how the process of global warming is developing. Further research in the field could be carried out. One of the most expected parts of the future studies is suggesting solutions.
The study on the situation of lobsters will be published in ICES Journal of Marine Science.
