One of the most common facts about yogurt is that it was used to make the milk last longer, whereas nowadays it has become a great source of money and good taste for every customer.
According to the U.S. latest Dietary Guidelines, people are advised to choose fat-free or low-fat dairy because fat is associated with the risk of heart disease and increased cholesterol. Plus, the full-fat diary has many calories.
But a recent study challenged the entire public opinion because scientists discovered that dairy fat lowers the risk of diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. Furthermore, there are still many other health benefits which are yet unknown. Still, researchers believe that these benefits might be related to weight management, thanks to the fact that the fat from dairy helps you to control your appetite better.
As the study is not concluded yet, experts advise customers to buy yogurt based on two common things. First, choose reduced-fat or nonfat yogurt and add nuts or some nut butter on top of it. Why? Because you will benefit from unsaturated fats which can be found in olive oil and nuts. Furthermore, you can combine yogurt with olive oil and chopped vegetables for a tasty dish.
Second, since refined sugar is already known as being worse for your health than saturated fat, you should choose an unsweetened full-fat yogurt over a sugary nonfat one.
Nowadays Greek yogurt has become one of the leading customer’s preferences thanks to its beautiful creamy texture, and the fact that it has less sugar and more protein. Plus, one of its qualities is that the naturally occurring sugar is removed together with the whey. However, if the whey is drained off, the yogurt loses a third of its zinc, calcium, and potassium.
On the other hand, experts recommend customers to buy regular yogurts or thickened yogurts, as Icelandic or Greek, because they offer various nutritional and culinary benefits.
Regarding sugar, scientists assure everyone that the natural sugar from dairy products is safe. Moreover, it would be a mistake to avoid these products because they have many essential nutrients. However, what we should avoid are the sweeteners added to these foods.
Experts advise us to buy plain yogurt and sweeten it ourselves with a little honey and fruits, maybe even nuts. Nevertheless, if you want to buy flavored yogurt, make sure that it contains 22 grams total sugar for regular yogurt and 15 grams for thickened yogurt.
