Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder, associated with bad quality sleep. The patients feel that they can’t breathe during their sleep, which makes them wake up several times in the middle of the night. As a result, they are tired during the day, and can’t concentrate well. Studies show that for some patients, treatment can turn out to be ineffective.
Doctors explain that sleep apnea occurs when the patients’ airways are blocked during their sleep. There are no clear signs of the disease, but snoring can be one of them. However, specialists account for the fact that not all people who snore suffer from sleep apnea.
People who have sleep apnea can encounter a series of different problems in their everyday life. They experience bad, unhealthy sleep. So they can feel tired the next day, and even wake up with headaches. Health specialists explain that this sleep disorder also affects patients’ ability to concentrate and memorize. What’s more, sleepiness and lack of concentration can also occur while they are driving, thus increasing the risk of car accidents.
These respiratory problems during sleep can cause further complications, as health experts explain. When someone is sleeping and suddenly can’t breathe, there is less oxygen in the cardiovascular system. This makes the heart work harder and put pressure on the blood vessels. Such a process can lead to heart diseases. It increases the risks of high blood pressure, heart attacks, and even diabetes.
According to specialists, overweight people are more prone to develop sleep apnea than other people. Further complications with the cardiovascular system are highly dangerous for them, as health experts warn.
As far as treatment is concerned, the most common method is CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure). People who suffer from sleep apnea are prescribed a CPAP machine, which provides them with oxygen while they sleep. However, the process can be quite uncomfortable, as they have to sleep having a plastic mask on.
A small study shows that people who use CPAP machines don’t always experience improvements. More than ten percent of the patients still have to deal with sleepiness during the day, and researchers don’t know how to explain the phenomenon.
Statistics show that over eighty million people in the United States suffer from sleep apnea. All of them experience problems with completing everyday tasks because of bad quality sleep. Are you one of them?
