Erectile dysfunction can be averted by consuming red wine and berries, scientists have recently discovered.
The study, featured in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, was carried out by a team of American and British experts from Harvard University and the University of East Anglia.
Researchers reviewed medical data concerning a group of approximately 50,000 middle-aged male subjects, all of them in good health at the beginning of the trial.
Starting from 1986, the participants had been required to fill in questionnaires once every 4 years, being surveyed regarding their capacity of becoming fully erect and staying so during sexual intercourse.
They also answered questions regarding their cigarette and alcohol use, fitness levels (amount of physical exercise per week) and dietary habits (consumption of berries, citrus fruit, coffee etc.)
The focus of this unprecedented research was on identifying a potential correlation between opting for foods rich in flavonoids and halting the onset of erectile problems.
As estimated by the Cleveland Clinic, sexual dysfunctions affect more than a half of all the men who are past their youth, and tend to be increasingly more common with the passage of time, around 70% of the male patients aged 70 and upwards experiencing such issues.
Given the growing ubiquity of this condition, which can turn out to be quite distressing and frustrating, scientists have long sought to discover a way to prevent it, and it may be that progress has finally been made in this area.
Study authors have now identified statistically significant differences when it came to the prevalence of impotence among various types of subjects, based on the diets they had followed.
Overall, during the course of the trial, approximately a third of the subjects had developed sexual dysfunctions, being unable to engage in intercourse as a result of excessive flaccidity.
The breakthrough was that volunteers who had ingested higher amounts of flavonoids were at a lower risk of suffering from erectile dysfunction.
The highest benefits were identified among those who had consumed food rich in flavones (such as parsley), flavonones (oranges, grapefruit and other citrus fruit) and anthocianins (blueberries, bananas, strawberries, cherries, blackcurrant, radishes and blackberries).
Those who had favored such meals had lowered their likelihood of being affected by impotence by around 14%, opting for such a nutritional plan being just as advantageous as taking quick-paced walks around 300 minutes per week.
Even more strikingly, by following a diet with plenty of flavonoids and also engaging in physical exercise on a regular basis, respondents had decreased their vulnerability concerning sexual dysfunction by approximately 21%.
Overall, the usefulness of these compounds was the highest among respondents who were under the age of 70, which suggests that such healthy diets should be introduced as soon as possible, in order to yield the most satisfying and obvious results.
Based on their findings, researchers now declare that boosting one’s intake of flavonoids, even by a small margin, might be extremely beneficial not just in keeping cardiovascular disease at bay, but also in prolonging sexual vigor, countering the dampening effects triggered by aging.
As explained by study lead author Aedin Cassidy, from the University of East Anglia, making such changes won’t even be that difficult, given that flavonoids are plentiful in various foods such as fruit and veggies, and also in drinks such as tea and red wine.
