This is the story of a golden retriever managed to snatch her owner out of death’s embrace by remaining at his side, even though that meant she could die as well.
Meet Kelsey, a golden retriever from Northern Michigan belonging to a man named Bob. Kelsey became a true hero after saving Bob from freezing to death. The events leading to Bob’s hospitalization and Kelsey being deemed a hero, began on New Year’s Eve.
An hour after midnight, Bob, who lives with Kelsey in a remote area of Michigan, left the house to grab a log to throw in the fireplace. Bob figured that the trip to his woodshed wouldn’t take more than a couple of minutes, and dressed only in a shirt, slippers, and long johns, went out of the house to brave the cold.
However, upon exiting his home, Bob slipped and broke his neck when he hit the ground. The man desperately screamed for help, as he was incapable of moving. Living in a remote area, meant that help could arrive too late.
The only living being to hear the man’s desperate scream was Kelsey’s, the man’s golden retriever. Hearing that the man was in distress, Kelsey rushed out of the house and went to her owner. Without even considering her own safety, the golden jumped on her owner, in an attempt to shield Bob from the cold.
According to the man’s statements, Kelsey never left his sight, and constantly licked him on the face to prevent Bob from losing consciousness. Kelsey stayed on top of her owner the whole night, licking his face and barking for help. At some point, Bob lost consciousness, but this did not stop Kelsey from protecting his owner.
The two were discovered the following morning by one of Bob’s neighbors who wanted to pay him a visit. The man immediately called 911, and, in a matter of minutes, an ambulance came to pick up Bob and to take him to the hospital for emergency surgery.
Dr. Chaim Colen, the neurosurgeon from the McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital who performed Bob’s operation, declared that the man was fortunate to have such a loyal friend, and that, if not for Kelsey’s gesture the man would have frozen to death.
The spinal decompression intervention performed on the man was successful, and Bob emerged from his ‘adventure’ with not even a frostbite.
