Civil War was one of the biggest 2016 blockbusters.
Be it the ultimate superhero clash that comic book fans were nervously expecting, or the sequel to one of the most popular Disney animated films of all times, the biggest 2016 blockbusters were a delight for audiences of all ages and preferences.
The Biggest 2016 Blockbusters
Marvel Studios together with Disney have taken over the big screens this past year. Dory’s Voyage brought over $1 billion from tickets alone, while Iron Man and Captain America’s plight exceeded the $1 billion mark.
DC adaptations also scored highly when it comes to ticket sales, but the audiences were not as pleased with the blockbusters’ quality.
Here are the biggest and most well-received movies of 2016.
Captain America: Civil War
When Civil War first hit theaters in May, it was the first movie to go over the $1 billion mark. Audiences proved once again that Marvel superheroes know how to sell, while the company managed to rise to their expectations and deliver a quality superhero action movie that held viewers glued to their seats.
The next Marvel movie that will hit theaters in May 2017 is Guardians of the Galaxy 2. Fans are already saying that it is going to be as good, if not better, than the first installment of the “Space Avengers.” One thing is for sure, the Marvel production will surely fill cinemas across the world.
Deadpool
Released on the 12th of February, 2016, Deadpool isn’t exactly what you would call a cult classic superhero movie. It’s the other way around, in fact. The movie’s protagonist possesses a superhuman regeneration ability, but he’s more about cracking oversexualized jokes and setting things on fire than actually fighting to protect humanity.
Although the movie had a budget of $58 million, Deadpool was so well received by public and critics that it returned a profit of $760 million. So, if you’re into explosions, snappy comebacks, and sex-related jokes, then Deadpool is the right movie for you.
Suicide Squad
Suicide Squad was released on the 1st of August 2016 and was directed by David Ayer, who also wrote and directed other cult classics such as Sabotage, Fury, End of Watch, and Street Kings. The movie had lots of fans even before it was launched mostly due to the scenes depicting the twisted relationship between the Joker played by Jared Leto and Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie).
Although some of the critics said that the result was disappointing, to say the least, the public decided though otherwise. Suicide Squad tells the story of an unusual strike team consisting of psychopathic killers, witches, paid assassins, and a Japanese girl whose katanas can actually capture the souls of those it killed.
