Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz is the former leader of the Democratic National Committee. One of her staffers from the IT department was recently seized just before fleeing the United States. The IT employee got charged with bank fraud. On top of that, this event constitutes another piece in a strange story.
FBI Agents Has Been Investigating the Case of Schultz’s IT Employee Since February
On Tuesday, Imran Awan was trying to go through the border and reach Pakistan. However, FBI caught him before leaving the country. Consequently, he was arrested on charges of scamming the Congressional Federal Credit Union.
Awan allegedly told lies about a loan valued at $165,000. His wife was also involved in this fraud by nominating a property in Alexandria as their primary residence. In fact, the location was only a rental. The funds were then transferred to Pakistan integrally.
Imran Awan has been working on Capitol Hill for a long time. However, he was in actuality a shared employee who had been standing at the disposal of several Democratic members of Congress for 13 years. The latest employer was Wasserman Schultz who got him fired after the incident.
The federal agents followed Awan closely ever since the month of February. The IT employee together with his wife and other several members of his family became the prime suspects in a procurement scam investigation. The entire group is held responsible for the disappearance of equipment from 20 House members and illegal access to House IT network.
The Odd Element of the Story Is Wasserman Schultz’s Decision to Keep the Staffer Despite FBI Investigation
However, the media sniffed something suspicious the moment all officials except Wasserman Schultz decided to release Awan from his duties. After police officers captured the scammer and got hold of his possessions, Schultz reportedly asked permission to retrieve a laptop that belonged to her.
On the other hand, Awan’s lawyer justified his client’s intentions to leave the country as a period of retreat to his family. The justification relies on Awan’s unjust discharge from his office and harassment coming from media and bloggers.
