There was a good reason why your parents kept telling you to eat your vegetables. A new research has revealed leafy greens are incredibly good for the brain, as they can keep dementia away. Therefore, instead of refusing that salad or choosing not to eat from the veggie plate, remember these products keep your memory and cognitive capacity intact as years pass.
Leafy greens can fight dementia and keep it away
The study was developed by researchers from Rush University Medical School. They recommend eating a little over half a cup of cooked dark leafy greens, or one and a third cups of lettuce per day. Such a diet should be adopted especially by older people, as these foods can delay dementia for several years.
For the study, researchers selected 960 participants aged between 58 and 99, and had to complete a questionnaire regarding their food habits. Also, over a period of about five years, they had their cognitive skills closely studied. The results were in the benefit of those who ate many leafy greens.
These people had brains 11 years younger than those who ate few to no vegetables. The average quantity these people consumed was one or two servings every day, which is about the recommended amount. However, the study couldn’t prove it was the vegetables which warded off dementia.
Good food and exercise preserves the health of your brain
Since it was only observational, it highlighted the correlation between good brain health and vegetable consumption. However, even this should be enough to convince people to eat more leafy greens, as they bring benefits of all kinds.
These findings come as encouraging in a darker context which assumes the number of people suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia would greatly increase over the upcoming years. However, eating healthily combined with an active lifestyle and constant cognitive practicing can really keep your brain young.
