According to a recent study, marijuana does not cause mental issues like anxiety or depression. A new research revealed that using cannabis as a grownup is not likely to cause mood disorders, including depression, anxiety or bipolar disorder.
This new study comes as a challenge to some previous experiments that concluded marijuana use is linked to depression and anxiety. Last year, a research concluded that one in four new cases of psychotic conditions are related to marijuana use. Back then, researchers claimed disorders such as schizophrenia could be the result of smoking extra-strong varieties of cannabis, known as skunk.
Nonetheless, a group of experts of Columbia University conducted a new set of tests in order to point out the effects of cannabis use on individuals’ mental state. The researchers evaluated the records of almost 35, 000 American adults who took part in the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions. They looked particularly at the predominance of marijuana use of the participants in 2001 and 2002.
Afterwards, experts assessed individuals’ level of mental issues three years later, in 2004 and 2005. Also, scientists analyzed a series of potentially confusing factors such as socio-demographic features, family history as well as past and present mental disorders. According to the researchers, the results showed no connection between cannabis use and the risks of developing mental issues.
However, it was discovered a relation between marijuana use and alcohol abuse, tobacco use or other drugs people used. The main author of the study, Mark Olfson, explained
‘The findings concerning cannabis raise the question of whether alcohol use also contributes to the risk of subsequent substance use disorders’.
According to his opinion is rather obvious that mixing up substances with powerful reactions one might be at risk of developing a disorder. Nonetheless, he added that problem does not concern the current study, which is focused only on marijuana use. The new study, though, is somehow causing a conflict of interest due to the fact that prior research claimed that marijuana and mental issues are connected.
Experts suggest these new findings are very important as the government still believes marijuana use and depression are directly connected. For example, the DEA made a written statement in 2014 claiming that marijuana is linked to depression among teens, adults or even dogs. The conclusion that Marijuana does not cause mental issues might be crucial information especially at the federal level as multiple states legalized marijuana use.
