A Mediterranean diet consists of a lot of healthy fats, including olive oil, nuts and fish instead of unhealthy fats from red meat or butter.
Unfortunately, people usually do not think twice before starting a diet. Experts advise everyone to understand that a healthy weight loss is not based on hunger, in other words not eating at all. Plus, that is why it is called a diet because we only need to change the way we eat and the amount of food.
Furthermore, if we follow a diet and lose a couple of pounds, it is important to remember that we have to maintain that weight for a year until our metabolism changes, and our body gets used to the new weight. After a diet, your body will always try to gain back the pounds that you worked hard to lose. That is why one year of maintaining that weight plays a significant role.
Moreover, nutritionists advise people to avoid extreme diets, because they are not healthy at all. Worse, they can lead to health problems, such as vitamin deficiencies, gastritis, and even ulcer.
Over 7,400 participants with ages between 55 to 80 years old attended a study based on three distinct diets: a low-fat diet with all-around fat avoidance, a Mediterranean diet full of nuts and a Mediterranean diet with lots of olive oil.
The team of researchers from the University of Barcelona in Spain concluded after five years that all participants from the three groups have lost a couple of pounds regardless of the fat intake which was higher in the Mediterranean groups but healthy as well.
In other words, fats have no connection with weight gain, at least not healthy fats. Overweight can lead to a lot of problems, such as diabetes, sleep apnea, cardiac troubles and hypertension. Plus, it causes discomfort because you are slower, and you cannot enjoy all the things you wish to do.
Fortunately, now we can rely on the combination of a Mediterranean diet and physical exercises. It is enough to do at least 75 minutes of fitness every week. Experts advise people to have a healthier lifestyle if they want to prevent the development of many diseases, even life-threatening ones.
