Recent research has shown that the moon phases affect the rain on Earth. When the moon is positioned overhead its gravity interferes with Earth’s atmosphere thus making it to bulge so that the pressure goes up.
Scientists said that this phenomenon is like enlarging a container at a very high pressure. Moreover, rain can be affected by a lower level of humidity because it is not very favorable for precipitation. This study has used 15 years of information which was collected by NASA as well as the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency between 1988 and 2012 in order to point out the fact that the rain can have a lower pressure when the moon is higher.
The moon is a very mysterious entity and has always had an interesting effect on us as species. The ancient civilizations such as Mayans and Greeks believed that the moon was, in fact, a goddess and its phases corresponded with a woman’s cycle.
However it may be, it is clear that the moon continues to have interesting effects on us and on our planet. Its gravity can have effects on ocean’s tides, pulling the water on the side of the moon that is closest to the Earth in that particular moment.
Previous studies have concluded that the pressure of the air on the Earth’s surface is related to the moon phases. It was in 1847 when the very first air changes were detected. In 1932 they found important changes linked with the temperature. However, moon phases affect the rain on Earth very slightly. About 1 percent of the total amount of rain is affected. This means that other characteristics of the weather are not changed and people may not even notice any difference.
Scientists said that there is no use for people carrying an umbrella only because the moon is rising; this change can be very useful when testing the climate models in order to see if their physics is good enough to show how the pull of the moon can cause less rain.
Researchers continue their studies at a bigger scale, from normal rain to heavy downpours, to find what rain categories are more prone to be affected by the moon phases. In addition they want to understand if the lunar phases have any effect on the frequency of rainstorms.
