Facebook now features a new image search tool.
Remember how frustrated you were when trying to find out a picture on Facebook in which you weren’t tagged? Well, forget about that because you will now be able to look for specific pictures on Facebook thank the platform’s new image search tool. Facebook declared that the new tool is so powerful, that a user can easily find a specific picture by searching stuff associated with that image.
So, with Facebook’s new image search tool you will be able to locate that long-lost vacation picture, the one you haven’t been manually tagged in. To do that, Facebook said you have to enter a search string associated with that specific picture.
For example, if you’ve been on a skiing trip with your friends, you can search for stuff like “Snowman,” “snow,” “skiing trip,” or even “having fun in the snow.” The new and improved picture-processing artificial intelligence will search millions of pictures, pixel by pixel, in order to locate that one image, you were looking for. Sound’s great, doesn’t it?
Well, it gets even better. Joaquin Candela, the big kahuna of Facebook’s Machine Learning Division declared that this is just the beginning and that the new image search tool will be enhanced in order to help those visually impaired.
Candela pointed out that even though the new image search tool is far from perfect, it can still find the picture or pictures you were looking for with an uncanny accuracy. He also added that the engine now features of a dozen actions, each of them helping for tracking down picture more efficiently.
For example, you can now locate pics by inputting search strings like ‘people dancing’ or ‘people walking.’ Other variations may include ‘people riding horses’ or ‘people playing musical instruments.’ It’s not much, but it’s still more useful than trying to find the picture on your own.
According to Facebook, the new image search tool functions on basically the same principle as the Google Photos or iOS 10’s image search engine. In addition to searching for stuff based on pictures elements, the new tool allows you to track down the image by comments and captions.
In other words, you can now wave bye-bye to having to search through tons of pictures for the right one. Just type in words associated with it, and Facebook’s new image search tool will do all the heavy lifting.
