There are numerous studies done in the past that have showed the extraordinary health benefits of nuts.
Most of the previous research was concentrated on the effects of nuts on cardiovascular health.
A new study suggests that eating a handful of nuts can actually help fight other serious illnesses like cancer. The same study also revealed that consuming nuts lowers the risk of other deadly diseases and helps those who consume nuts live longer.
The recent study was conducted by a team of researcher from the Maastricht University in Holland.
The scientists started their research by analyzing data collected from the Netherlands Cohort Study which started back in 1986.
The researchers investigated the data of more than 120,000 Dutch people between the ages of 55 and 69.
All the participants were asked how often and how many nuts and peanuts they consumed on a regular basis.
The volunteers were also questioned about how much peanut butter they ate.
The next step of the study was to analyze the data regarding the mortality rate since the research started in 1986.
The researchers took into consideration the general as well as the specific causes of death.
The scientists published their recent findings on the health benefits of nuts in the International Journal of Epidemiology.
According to the results of the study, those who consumed approximately 10 to 15 grams of nuts per day were 23% less likely to die of various illnesses like respiratory disease, diabetes, neurodegenerative conditions and cancer.
The researchers also found that the participants who ate more nuts on a daily basis were younger, more educated, ate a healthier diet, took supplements, drink more alcohol and were hypertensive.
Piet A van den Brandt, one of the lead authors of the study, explained that a lower mortality rate was seen when participants consumed about 15 grams of nuts daily. Those who ate more than 15g were not considerably less likely to develop deadly disease and die from them.
The amazing benefits of nuts come from the fact that tree nuts and peanuts contain compounds like powerful antioxidants, vitamins, fiber and a high content of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids.
According to the experts, all these compounds can help lower the risk of serious health conditions and the risk of death.
Although the study showed that nuts and peanuts have great health benefits, consuming peanut butter often does not have the same health properties.
