A 35-year-old man from Texas was rushed to the hospital in critical condition after a sand tunnel collapsed, burying him under three feet of sand. The man is currently being held at the St. Augustine’s Flagler Hospital on life support.
Victim Reportedly Dug a Sand Tunnel Through Dune
According to Rachel Goggin Burt, Lee Goggin’s sister, they were on a family vacation at the Crescent Beach when the event occurred. Reportedly, while his wife was tending to the children, Lee Goggin started to dig a sand tunnel by hand in the nearby dune.
Burt said that his wife recorded the man’s entire performance. After digging enough through the sand, the Texas man entered the hand-made tunnel probably for an unforgettable vacation picture. However, much to his misfortune, the make-shift sand tunnel collapsed on top of him, trapping Goggin under three feet of sand.
The man’s wife immediately called the authorities, who managed to extricate Goggin from the collapsed tunnel. According to the man’s sister, when the firefighters took him out of the tunnel, the man was in cardiac arrest.
The paramedic managed to resuscitate him and to transport the unfortunate sand digger to the Flagler Hospital in St. Augustine. Upon arrival, Goggin could not breathe on his own and was placed on life support.
According to the doctors, the Texas man is still in critical condition and are quite reserved regarding his chances of survival. Bart and Lee’s family set up a GoFundMe account to cover the man’s hospital expenses.
In a Facebook post, Lee’s sister wrote that the man is barely clinging to his life and that the family is praying for him. Come Monday; the man is scheduled for a ‘reboot’ – the doctors will attempt to warm his body, hoping that he will regain consciousness.
