Are you a fan of movies and video games? If so, then you must surely be familiar with concepts such as ‘power armor,’ ‘mech,’ and ‘robotic armored exoskeletons.’ Ever since humanity found out that technology and science can be used to improve life, it dreamt of the day when we will be able to walk side-by-side with robots, automatons, androids, and cyborgs.
While roboticists are constantly researching technologies that may allow us one day to construct a sentient artificial being, others look to other vistas. Such was the case of a South Korean team of engineers who was successful in creating a fully-functional mechanized power suit.
Nicknamed Method 2, the four-meter giant can mimic any type of movement made by its users. At the moment, no less than 30 engineers and roboticists are working around the clock in order to improve Method 2’s unique abilities.
The gigantic mechanized power suit was developed by Hankook Mirae Technology, a South Korea-based robotics company, and its construction began in 2015. Method 2 weighs approximately one and a half tons, and its intimidating arms weigh 260 kilograms.
In addition, it would seem that Method 2 can move with the same fluidity and grace as a normal human being even though it weighs that much. One term used by Method 2’s creator to describe it would be ‘awesome.’
The mechanized power suit looks very much like the robots used by the marines from the movie Avatar to explore Pandora. Method 2 also looks like one the robot from Transformers, minus the sentience and the sense of humor.
If you’re thinking about Method 2 being used in warfare, you will be disappointed to find out that its makers have not given any thought about using it for warfare yet. It would seem that Method 2 was built to protect operators working in hazardous environments.
One the engineers who design Method 2’s key systems declared that the mechanize power suit will prove very useful in Japan’s efforts to managing areas filled with pockets of radiation. The suit can probably be adapted in order to operate in big warehouses or to perform other actions which involve heavy lifting.
However, the power suit is far from being ready. The scientists said that they would need at least a couple of years to balance the behemoth’s power systems and to correct any movement limitations.
