Recent news reported the famous Legend of Zelda turned 30 years old on February 21st. Taking into consideration the fact that gaming industry is only a couple decades old, this is a considerably achievement. It was estimated that Nintendo’s Legend of Zelda is as popular as Super Mario. So as to celebrate the game’s anniversary, Nintendo made a list with some possible unknown facts about the game.
In the original game, Link received his wooden sword from an old man. However, this was not shown in the plot, until much later. At first, Link had a low weapon in his inventory, but early gamers didn’t know what to do with it. Also, Link is left-handed. He was turned into a righty in the Wii edition of Twilight Princess. This happened because most of the gamers hold the Wiimote with their right hand.
Zelda had many characterizations. Even though she is known as Princess of Hyrule, Zelda has also been portrayed as a ninja, a pirate and as Link’s childhood friend. In addition, she was created after the wife of F. Scott Fitzgerald, whose name was Zelda. Zelda also inspired Robin Williams, who named his daughter after the game character.
The Legend of Zelda was almost precursor to Minecraft. Initially, the game was to be distributed on floppy discs. The developers wanted to use the extra storage so as the gamers can design their own levels to save and share. However, the idea was dropped and Nintendo chose cartridges.
The game does not accept cheating devices like GameShark. In the Ocarina of Time, there was left an Easter egg of a shark. The animal was stuck in a cage at the lake’s bottom. Moreover, if gamers enter a GameShark cheat code in Ocarina of Time, Arwings will quickly attack them.
The Legend of Zelda is slightly connected with David Lynch’s Twin Peaks. It is said Link’s Awakening was inspired by the series’ memorable characters who lived in a small community. Also, Link’s outfit was based on Peter Pan’s green costume.
What’s more, the Triforce Symbol was designed after a traditional Japanese symbol of the 13th-14th century. It belonged to the Hōjō clan and it was called Mitsuuroko which translates as ‘Three Dragon Scales’.
Least but not last, Koji Kondo’s song theme wasn’t the original idea for the game’s soundtrack. The developers wanted to introduce Ravel’s Boléro as the game’s theme. However, they couldn’t afford the rights therefore the idea was left aside.
The game became very popular among players in the whole world. Ever since it was released it sold over 75 million copies. The fact that the Legend of Zelda Turned 30 Years Old proved yet again the game is more popular than ever.
