Many people need blood transfusion each year, therefore the American Red Cross prompts platelet and blood donors to pick a day to bring their contribution in helping patients during the summer awareness campaign of 2016.
The campaign is sponsored by Suburban Propane and will have many seasonal activities which will entertain the donors. According to David Lewis, interim regional CEO, American Red Cross New Jersey Region, patients have no summer holiday when it comes to blood and platelet donations because they rely on the help of volunteers.
Every donor will receive a Red Cross T-shirt during May 27th and 31st as a reward for their contribution. There is an average need of 14,000 blood donations every day to ensure enough supply for 2,600 hospitals and transfusion centers throughout the US. Unfortunately, the number of donors drops off significantly during summer, thus the purpose of this event.
Nevertheless, Suburban Propane will do more than help promote the need for donations but will also encourage its customers and employees to bring their contribution. According to Mark Wienberg, Suburban Propane’s Chief Development Officer, the partnership between the company and the Red Cross plays a crucial role in supporting this work in order to bring an improvement within many communities.
The company’s employees will help every Red Cross blood drive throughout the U.S. as part of one of the largest national volunteer commitments. This partnership will bring other benefits, such as the Home Fire Campaign activities and the support for Service to the Armed Forces.
Debbie Traub, a Suburban Propane employee, was touched by the Red Cross efforts when in May 2014, her 74-year-old father suffered a home accident and was provided with donations from the Red Cross. Because of the severe injuries, he needed to stay 20 days in the intensive care unit where he received countless blood transfusions.
From such an experience Traub understood the importance of being part of such an initiative. That is why she decided to become a volunteer so that she can honor her father and bring her contribution. Her inspiring story and many others encouraged many volunteers to devote themselves to such a noble cause.
Hopefully, many people will become blood donors to support hospitals and double the efforts of the Red Cross, which relies on corporate partners and devoted volunteers.
