Angry Users Dropped the Mic at Google

Apr 2, 2016 By Jose Buttner Leave a Comment

"Minion dropping the mic"

The GIF featuring a minion angrily dropping a mic caused a lot of trouble among Gmail users.

Angry users dropped the mic at Google yesterday when what was supposed to be an innocent April Fools’ ruse ruined friendships and even ended up costing the jobs of some people.

Google was really inspired with some of it pranks. The “Google Cardboard Plastic” was one of the most inspired videos in a while, so was the “missing socks app”. Which Australians still think Google should spend some time developing.

But there was one prank that was not received well by the public. Angry users dropped the mic at Google yesterday because the GIF + mute option was not a good idea.

Most companies use .gmail e-mail addresses as default. So the percentage of business or official e-mails is high. Unfortunately, April 1st was on a Friday, a work day.

The mic dropping chaos started early during the day after sleepy Gmail users started sending important e-mails and pressing the wrong button in the process.

Why the wrong button? Because in honor of April Fools’, Google decided to replace the “Send + Archive” button next to “Send” with “Send + Drop the Mic.” The problem with the concept was that once people pressed the button, there was no turning back from the consequences.

The e-mail was sent as the sender wrote it, but with a catch. The signature was accompanied by a GIF of a minion dressed in a royal manner dropping the mic in front of what seemed like a big audience. To add insult to injury, none of the replies that the sender received were shown in the inbox.

In just a few hours, the internet was filled with angry Gmail users that were blaming the company for the chaos that the feature ensued. While it is true that the Gmail users received a notification that explained the great power that came with the button for a day, most of them just closed the pop-up, eager to carry on finishing their workload and enjoying the weekend.

Little did they know that that the window they chose to ignore contained words of wisdom and a “Beware” notification. But Google should have thought about asking or permission before going around and changing the purpose of the default buttons.

In just a few hours after the prank system was implemented, angry users dropped the mic at Google, and the company was forced to remove the feature and apologize for all of the inconvenience it created.

Maybe the fact that the story went viral will help the unlucky souls get their job, or friendships back.

Google Destinations Helps You Plan Your Getaway

"Google Destinations Helps You Plan Your Dream Vacation "

Plan ahead your dream vacation by using Google Destinations.

Got stuck when planning your vacation? Say no more, because this tool will help you plan your dream vacation fastest than you can say “deep learning artificial intelligence”. In a matter of seconds, Google Destinations can help you schedule and plan your trips ahead of time, without breaking a sweat.

We all know how hard it is to plan the perfect getaway. Making checklists, checking them twice, to see if you’ve got everything except the kitchen sink are probably the first symptoms associated with someone who wants to plan a little vacation.

And this isn’t even the hard part. Maybe the most excruciating part of a trip is planning ahead. Checking to see when you and your SO can take a few days off, searching for a hotel, scouring for cheap plane tickets – this is the painful reality each of us must face when we want to hit the open road

That’s why Google, in its magnanimity decided to give the user a hand in planning his or hers trip. So, how does it work? Well, picture if you will, the following scenario: instead of performed endless searches for hotels, plane tickets and consulting several route advisors, wouldn’t it be great to have one app that can do all those things for you?

Google now introduces the new Destinations feature, the web’s most comprehensible vacation planner and location search engine. Using state-of-the-art search algorithms, the new search string can help users plan their dream vacations in just a couple of minutes.

All that you have to do in order to access this cool new function is to add “Travel” at the end of your search string. For example, if you want to travel to Aspen, fire up google and type in “Aspen Travel”.

In a matter of seconds, Google will display the most used land routes, tourist traps, gas stations and how long it will take to reach the destination using a car. If you are not in the mood for driving, you can always use the same UI to search for plane tickets to your dream destination.

Google Destinations allows users to search for the cheapest deals when it comes to plane tickets. Moreover, you can always use the search engine to book a room ahead of time.

According to Radhika Malpani, the Engineering Director for the travel section, the new search engine lets you book rooms six months in advance.

And last, but not least, the newest search engine can even suggest the best places to practice your hobbies. For example, if someone is into skiing or skydiving, you can use Google Destinations to search for the best instructors, lowest prices and gorgeous locations.
