Exploding Kittens Can Be Played on Android Devices

Apr 21, 2016 By Graziella Paone Leave a Comment

"Exploding Kittens"

Th Exploding Kittens app is based on the popular card game.

Good news for the fans of kittens, goats, tacos, and explosions, Exploding Kittens can be played on Android devices, too. The popular card game was first adapted into an app for iOS devices, but it has now been modified to be compatible with Android, too. There is no available news for Windows Phone users.

The initial Exploding Kittens game was a card game; a strategic masterpiece that made you think about Russian Roulette. Of course, there are no bullets involved, only kittens that are prone to exploding if they are not engaged with a laser beam or bribed with a catnip sandwich.

The rules of the game are simple. You take the stack of cards and place it face down on the table. Then the players draw cards. If they get an exploding kitten they die, that is, if they don’t have a card at hand like a catnip sandwich or a laser that will diffuse the kitten, and let the player remain in the game.

Exploding Kittens broke records ever since it was in its developmental stage. Oatmeal created a Kickstarter account to transform it from card game into a mobile app. And in just 20 minutes they managed to reach $10,000.

At the end of the campaign, Oatmeal managed to raise more than 1,000 times more money than they initially asked for, meaning that the public was really anxious to see the Exploding Kittens card game.

Naturally, when the game eventually came out, it was a hit, selling millions of copies. And because the concept and artwork were original and incredibly stunning, they decided to make an app out of the beloved card game.

So Oatmeal adapted it for iOS a couple of weeks ago, and now Exploding Kittens can be played on Android devices, too. Unfortunately, there is no news if the creators are planning to make a version compatible with Windows mobile devices.

The app is available on Google and Apple Play Store at the astonishing price of $1,99. Of course, there is an additional $1,99 cost for the expansion pack.

The mobile game supports a minimum of two players, but it could be played in up to five people. The app was designed to allow people to play with friends or stranger, and it also features backwards compatibility, individuals using different devices being able to play a match together.

Caution is needed, though, because this game can ruin or create friendships. It’s all in the manner in which you play it.

Can iOS’s Night Shift Mode Help us Sleep Better?

Mar 28, 2016 By Benjamin Teh Leave a Comment

"Can iOS’s Night Shift Mode Help us Sleep Better?"

Apple has launched a new application called Night Mode that shifts light spectrum from blue to orange.

Encouraged by the latest research in the area of sleep disorders, Apple released an application called Night Shift. According to the company, the application was designed to shift the light spectrum from blue short wavelength light to orange or beige to mimic the sunset.

Recent sleep studies have determined that electronic devices such as smartphones or tablets may disrupt our sleep cycle. Researchers have explained that such devices emit a so-called shortwave blue light that is capable of delaying the moment when our bodies start to produce melatonin, a hormone involved in the sleep cycle.

Naturally, tech companies have struggled to come up with various ways to overcome this obstacle. Several Android and iOS apps have emerged since then, each of them designed to help the users get a good night’s sleep.

But do they actually work? According to Doctor Phyllis Zee, a doctor specialized in sleep issues, the application doesn’t do much for our circadian rhythm, but it’s better than nothing. The doctor, who is currently working at the Northwestern University declared that the best treatment out there for sleep disorders is to put our phones away before going to sleep.

However, since everyone is living the age of technology to the maximum, it’s often too tempting to leave your device alone before going to bed. There’s no harm in checking up your inbox or catching up on the latest new before hitting the sack.

Well, the scientists tend to argue that’s exactly what we shouldn’t do before going to sleep. It may seem harmless, but such action can severely disrupt our sleep patterns. And we do know what happens when we wake up feeling tired.

While Doctor Zee hails Apple’s commitment towards its customers, there are other who argue that such applications have little effect on the long-run. On the other hand, other researchers tend to believe that all the sleep studies involving electronic devices have it all wrong.

Raymond Soneira, the acting president of DisplayMate Tech, said that although the studies seem pretty convincing, the scientists don’t have a good grasp of how the human eye perceives color or how the display works.

So, what’s Night Shift? According to Apple, Night Shift is the best application out there that does not disturb your sleeping pattern. After the application is installed, it will use geotags and other instruments to determine the day-night cycle.

As the day draws to an end, Night Shift will kick in, shifting your display’s light spectrum from blue to orange or beige. Note that the application doesn’t work if the battery saving mode is turned on.

Whether the application is helpful or not, remains to be seen.

Wikipedia Update Finally Lands on iOS

"Wikipedia on iOS had new Feature"

Wikipedia just announced that it released an improved version of the mobile app for iOS handsets.

Great news for all iOS users out there. No, Mac hasn’t won the computer master race. Instead, Wikipedia has just released a new version of ever popular platform for iOS handsets. According to Wiki, the new version of the app doesn’t only support the new Apple technologies but offers faster access to its core functions.

Recently, Wikipedia, probably the biggest online repository of knowledge, has just announced that it launched a new version of the mobile application. The new wiki update will target only iOS and Apple-related products.

Although the app was on the market for some time now, the application needed a couple of improvements. For instance, Wikipedia has been experimenting for quite a while now with off-line modes and with mobile editing.

The new version of the app will now allow users to write and post articles directly from their iOS devices. Furthermore, the update is more social media-friendly, meaning that users can opt to share fun facts with their friends and family.

As Wikipedia stated, the new update is focused more on personalization, than on functionality. Still, this doesn’t necessarily mean that the Wiki didn’t enhance some of the old features.

Regarding customization, Wiki announced that the mobile platform is now more attune to the reader’s needs, meaning that the platform will feature built-in algorithms that will analyze the user’s preference to recommend similar articles.

Moreover, the updated iOS app will also feature daily pictures, feeds and random articles, all of them based on the user’s previous searches.

Now, functionality wise, Wikipedia has a couple of surprises in store for us. First of all, the core functions of the mobile app have been updating as to be compatible with the latest version of iOS. Second, Wiki found a way for the user to access the new technologies developed by Apple such as 3D touch and Handoff.

By using the 3D touch feature, the user will be able to perform quick searches on Wikipedia, read random headlines or even to resume a previous lecture.

As far as the Handoff feature is concerned, this is where things become interesting. According to Wiki, this feature will now allow users to access primary phone or device feature like contact list or to message without having to exit from the application or to switch to their home screen.

Moreover, the Handoff feature will also help users pick up their reading after switching their devices, meaning that a reader can stream the same article or articles from an iPhone, Mac or iPad.

To get your hands on the new version of the app, head on over to the Apple Store and tap on the “Update” button.
