Mercedes has a new self-driving bus.
Many of the world’s top car brands, Mercedes included, adopted the latest perspective of autonomous cars that would become a safer alternative to standard vehicles.
These self-driving vehicles are expected to deal with traffic, road rage, accidents and other problems which are currently affecting the automobile market. But some experts believe that even if self-driving vehicles make traffic less stressful, roads will still be crowded.
But Mercedes has come up with a revolutionary idea of converting public transport to autonomous buses that will carry a lot of people and make roads less crowded. There is the idea that if public transport is improved, some people will no longer go to work using their personal vehicles.
Instead, they will choose to go to work using a self-driving bus. Mercedes-Benz has a new project that will bring on the market a new model, called CityPilot, an autonomous bus that will fulfill the demands of every person regarding transport recreation, school, work, and other needs that you won’t find in a private vehicle.
The latest Mercedes-Benz Future Bus CityPilot is equipped with a Highway Pilot system that was already used in the autonomous Actros Truck, but with additional technological features that would make the new model the ideal asset for public transport.
The self-driving bus can communicate with traffic lights and even recognize obstacles including pedestrians who cross the road. Also, the vehicle will automatically brake in time to avoid injuring anyone.
CityPilot will stop at all bus stops, and it will open and close its doors to allow passengers to get off and on. The new Mercedes benefits from a GPS system that is capable of locating other vehicles that are even at a distance of a few centimeters.
Besides this feature, the Future Bus has other radar systems and cameras which monitor and scan the surroundings. The German company has announced that CityPilot made a successful first public trip of 20 kilometers from Amsterdam’s Schiphol to Haarlem.
Experts have chosen this route because it has a wide variety of obstacles such as traffic lights, tunnels, and bends that the self-driving bus navigated with impressive results. This is not the company’s first attempt of an autonomous car because Mercedes has successfully designed the F015 Luxury in Motion research model that allowed passengers to use gestures and touchscreens for a more comfortable journey.
