Michigan Children’s Hospitals ranked highest this year.

The United States has many hospitals which provide patients with all the support they need. After the latest Best Children’s Hospital rankings of this year, three hospitals from Michigan were regarded as some of the best.

The top was made based on 10 distinct features such as urology; pulmonology; orthopedics; neurosurgery and neurology; nephrology; neonatology; gastroenterology and surgery; endocrinology and diabetes; heart surgery and cardiology; and cancer.

The data was collected from 106 hospitals to establish which are ranked the best. The best hospital in Michigan was University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor. It was ranked in the top 50 with all specialties besides urology, endocrinology, and diabetes.

Furthermore, nephrology was ranked at number 23, whereas heart surgery and cardiology had the highest rank, number 7.

According to Paul King, C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, and Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital executive director, they are happy to be among the top children’s hospitals in the United States, as they are devoted to supporting and saving children suffering from many dangerous and rare health problems.

He also added that this year’s ranking showed that the hospital’s work and efforts paid off. Next is the DMC Children’s Hospital of Michigan located in Detroit, having four specialties among the top 50. Neurosurgery and neurology were ranked number 33, while orthopedics occupied the 28th position.

It is also worth mentioning that the third Michigan hospital with three specialties among the top 50 was Spectrum Health Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids. Nephrology was ranked number 48, urology number 47, whereas cancer was ranked the highest, number 42.

Furthermore, Michigan had a top of 11 hospitals with the highest rank in at least three specialties. Among them were Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio and Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago.

In addition to this, Boston Children’s Hospital was ranked the highest, having all 10 specialties among the top 50. The ranking was calculated based on various factors and on every specialty which was analyzed individually.

Around 30 percent was accounted by experts regarding the medical outcome, surgical complications, infections, and survival. Plus, over 50 percent consisted of family-centeredness, excellence, and safety. The remaining 15 percent was based on an annual survey of pediatric specialists and hospital’s reputation. All in all, it seems that children from Michigan have the best medical benefits.

Crystal Clear Drinking Water In Lake Michigan

Jun 11, 2016 By Benjamin Teh Leave a Comment

Sunset on Lake Michigan

Lake Michigan water is very clear.

It’s been 3 years already since the Lake Michigan water is regarded as being one the clearest source of drinking water supply in the United States.

As proof, the Michigan City officials organized boat trips for scientists, tourists, and citizens. A 60-foot laboratory vessel, known as the W.G. Jackson, took 30 people on a short educational trip to draw samples from the bottom and top of the lake.

It is worth mentioning that this boat does not just sail on Lake Michigan, but also on Muskegon Lake and along Michigan’s western shoreline. Its scientific purpose is to gather samples from these three sources, compare and use them as a teaching material for students.

During the last trip, the samples proved that the water quality was almost perfect. According to Shirley McIntire, a science instructor at Grand Valley State University’s regional campus in Muskegon, the fact that the water is clear proves that it is safe to drink.

Another important method that scientists use to check the water quality includes lowering a massive disk into the water to check how far down will it go before becoming impossible to spot. The people on the boat were allowed to perform this experiment. As a result, the disk was still visible even after 19 feet in depth, reaching the maximum distance at which a disk could still be seen by the human eye.

Furthermore, several other aspects show whether the water is clear or not, such as its color, pH level and the activity on the lake’s bottom. Surprisingly, scientists made a discovery as well after pulling up small pieces of smooth brown gravel from the bottom of the lake.

In addition to this, a plankton net was also used to check the supply of these organisms. The data showed that this important source of food for many of the lake creatures thrives in the Lake Michigan water.

Nevertheless, the biggest contribution to this initiative belongs to the Michigan City Sanitary District, that starting from 2014, has sent the vessel on educational voyages to inform people and make them understand how important is for us to have clean water sources.

Hopefully, the water of the Lake Michigan will remain as clean as it is today, setting an example for other communities to start doing the same.

Celebrate “International Dark Sky Week”

Apr 4, 2016 By Jose Buttner Leave a Comment

"Night sky in a park"

The event is raising awareness on the negative impact that light pollution has on the environment.

This week Michigan will celebrate “International Dark Sky Week”. This means that several of the parks in the area will remain opened overnight to allow stargazers the possibility of looking at their favorite stars without any source of light pollution nearby.

But this is not the first time that the people in Michigan are given the opportunity to celebrate “International Dark Sky Week.” The event was created back in 2003 by Jennifer Barlow, a student at the Michigan University.

According to what Barlow wrote on the official website of the event, she created the “International Dark Sky Week” so that people could have the opportunity of enjoying the wonders present in the night sky without the harmful effects of light pollution.

Barlow continues to say that “the Universe is our view into our past and our vision into the future … I want to preserve its wonder.”

Apart from offering the people of Michigan the opportunity of gazing at a light-pollution-free sky, the “International Dark Sky Week” is also meant to bring awareness to the importance of minimizing light pollution. The organizers also offer solutions in that perspective.

Moreover, people are not only asked to celebrate “International Dark Sky Week” because they can bask in the beauty of the night sky. But also to be reminded of the dangerous effects that light pollution has on our bodies.

Previous studies have shown that the human organism is accustomed to the natural cycle of light and darkness. Our bodies are used to the small amount of light emitted by the moon and the stars at night.

By keeping lights on, and by surrounding ourselves with unnecessary artificial light during the evening, we interrupt our natural body processes. Our general health and our sleep are being affected by light pollution and the organizers of “International Dark Sky Week” are trying to point that out.

If you live in Michigan, and if you want to celebrate “International Dark Sky Week” then all you have to do is locate one of the parks that have adapted their visiting hours for the special occasion.

As a bonus, the “Besser Museum” and “The Friends of Rockport” will be in charge of an educational program that will offer valuable information about the night sky to all willing attendees.

All you have to do is grab a blanket and head out to the park. And if you want to go prepared, you can always check out the most interesting things on the sky this week.
