Wolves can be dangerous too humans if they are further protected by the Endangered Species Act.
After recent studies in the region, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has concluded that the Alexander Archipelago wolves are not an endangered species. The recent downsize that the wolf species has seen is not substantial enough to prompt the wildlife services to protect these exemplars.
The list of endangered species in the United States was recently revisited because officials believed some exemplars needed additional protection, while others needed to be removed from the list. Many discussions have been made in relation to the Alexander Archipelago wild wolves, who could go extinct unless officials take measures to protect them.
Local inhabitants, on the other hand, insisted that there is no need to protect the wild species as having large packs of wolves in the vicinity of their homes could be dangerous. Consequently, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service proceeded to a census of the existing population of wolves in the U.S. regions.
Researchers have concluded that the population of wild wolves currently numbers up to 2,700 exemplars. Additional medical analyses have revealed that the animals are healthy and they do not require special care.
The biggest decrease of the wolf population was registered in the Prince of Wales Island. Researchers have discovered that there has been a 75 percent drop in the population of the wolves since the 1990s, but even so, there is no actual extinction danger as the overall decrease barely amounts to 6 percent.
Wildlife services think it is too dangerous to further support the increase of wolves’ population. U.S. inhabitants risk getting attacked by wolf packs if researchers continue to support their development. As a matter of fact local inhabitants demanded authorities to do something to prevent wolves from getting near their homes.
The federal government concluded their official announcement by saying that this is their final decision on the Alexander Archipelago wolf species and they are not willing to reconsider it in the following period. It remains to be seen how conservative groups will react to this new announcement.
