Dogs are vital aids against diabetes.
Scientists have recently discovered that dogs might be able detect type 1 diabetes. Nowadays, more and more families start relying on medical alert service dogs to observe their children’s behavior.
These dogs can sense when these kids experience low blood sugar episode. This is a breakthrough as dogs will become a vital asset for the future of these children.
Amy, a Diabetic Alert Dog, has become famous after being assessed to monitor Kate Beausaert, the daughter of a family from Alliston, Ontario. Diabetes patients are most vulnerable when they sleep, as they can experience hypoglycemia without waking up.
Such a dangerous situation might even lead to death. Doctors underline that the average blood sugar levels should range between 4.0 to 7.0 millimoles per liter. If Kate’s blood sugar level drops down to 4.5 mmol/L or even lower, Amy will try to wake her up.
Nevertheless, in the worst case scenario where Kate does not wake up, Amy will alert her parents, and they will take care of the girl. According to the Endocrinology Advisor, Diabetic Alert dogs have proven to be very helpful in assisting children suffering from diabetes.
Dog owners declared that they felt safer when these dogs came in their lives. According to Dr. Evan Los of the Oregon Health & Science University, dog owners’ confidence was rated 7.9 out of 10, whereas satisfaction scored 8.9 from 10 on the Likert scale.
Scientists did not know until now how dogs were capable of sensing type 1 diabetes in patients. Some researchers from the University of Oxford and Cambridge University discovered that dogs could detect the level of isoprene in a person’s breath.
Isoprene is a chemical that can be easily noticed by dogs because it increases when a patient suffers a blood sugar drop off. More people have become interested in purchasing these dogs, as they seem to be the ideal canine companion for their children.
Diabetes is not a deadly disease, but it is one that cannot be cured. Therefore, people suffering from diabetes need to be extra careful. However, life can be more fun when you have a dog that is your friend and also your first aid in case you need help.
