Nowadays, summer is associated with sun protection as many tourists and beachgoers want to enjoy this period. But it might be dangerous for many of us if we do not know how to protect ourselves from the ultraviolet rays.
Experts recommend people to stick to a sun protection package consisting of sunscreen as well. Both physical and chemical sunscreens are considered efficient enough against the sun if they are applied correctly.
Chemical sunscreens are a bit more expensive than physical sunscreens. On the other hand, physical sunscreens are hypoallergenic, so they might represent a better option for people who are more sensitive.
When it comes to ultraviolet rays, UVB rays are shorter and more frequent as they are responsible for causing sunburns. But UVA rays have a long wavelength, so they penetrate the skin deeper increasing the risk of skin cancer.
Out of three types of skin cancer, only one of them might be deadly, and it is known as melanoma. That is why early detection is vital when it comes to cancer because even melanoma can be 100 percent cured if you receive an early diagnosis.
Dermatologists advise customers to purchase products that have the „broad spectrum” label on them because they offer protection against both UVA and UVB rays. Also, people are advised not to fall for the „waterproof” label because no sunscreen has the same efficiency after the contact with a liquid.
Scientists recommend people to apply sunscreen every two hours, after swimming, or excessive sweating to make sure that the UV rays do not harm their skin. Regarding physical sunscreen, some people avoid it because it remains quite visible on the skin and it is difficult to wash off.
Its benefits are that this sunscreen reflects the light or absorbs it, and it provides an excellent sun protection against both UVA and UVB rays.
Beachgoers and residents should look for sunscreen products with SPF 30 (sun protection factor) because it is the best option when it comes to protection percentage. For example, SPF 15 sunscreens offer 93 percent protection, whereas SPF 30 sunscreens provide 97 percent protection against the sun.
Any additional SPF blocks just with one or two percent more UV rays and these products are quite expensive compared with SPF 30 sunscreen. The sun protection package also includes protective clothing such as long-sleeved shirts, UV-blocking sunglasses, and hats.
