Deserae Turner, the 15-year-old girl who survived after being shot in the head by two teenagers at the beginning of 2017, makes her first public appearance alongside her father. Even though she was brought in a wheelchair and it was more than obvious that the girl made efforts to get up and move to her seat, she had a big smile on the face during the press conference and told the reporters that she had forgiven her attackers.
Utah Girl Is Happy to Be Alive
The tragic events that occurred on the 16th of February would change Turner’s life forever. According to the Utah authorities who investigated the girl’s case, Deserae went out to meet two of her friends. The girl did not return home.
Alarmed by Turner’s disappearance, her family notified the authorities, which immediately began combing the city. Two women, whom the authorities said that they were related to the Turner family, went to search for Deserae near the city’s canal. They’ve told the police that the 14-year-old girl loved to take long strolls along this route.
After searching the area, the two women found the Utah girl lying face down in a ditch. The women took off their trench coats in order to cover the girl and dialed 911. When the authorities arrived, they’ve presumed that the girl was suffering from hypothermia, but they soon discovered that she had a gunshot wound to the back of her head.
This was when Deserae’s struggle began. She was rushed to the hospital, where the surgeons managed to remove the bullet and to stabilize the Utah girl. After six weeks of treatment and therapy, Deserae was back on her feet and healthy enough to be reunited with her family.
The Fact in Deserae Turner’s Case
When she was fit enough, the 14-year-old girl told the investigators how she wound up in the ditch. According to the authorities, the Utah girl was talking to two of her teen friends. While playing a video game, the two cooked up a plan to murder the girl.
Later that day, they’ve asked the girl to meet them by the old canal to buy a pocket knife. The girl went without hesitation to meet her friends and to purchase the item. As soon after the boys handed Deserae the pocket knife, one of them pulled up a gun and shot the girl in the head.
The ballistics report suggests that the Utah girl was back turned the moment she was hit by the bullet. Deserae’s attackers were taken into custody and charged with aggravate robbery, obstruction of justice, and aggravated attempted murder, meaning that they might be trialed as adults.
