Recently, the Monterey Bay Aquarium has hosted a most unusual event. On Sunday evening, one of the sea otters from the Monterey Bay Aquarium gave birth to a playful baby sea otter. The whole performance was taped, and the event was later posted on social media. The video of sea otter giving birth video has become viral because it’s a once-in-a-lifetime event.
The exquisite moment was captured on film and shared on all social media channels by a couple of staff members. Of course, with everybody in loved with the gentle, puppy-like marine creatures, it was only natural that the YouTube clip would become viral.
And, might we add, that sea otters are as cute as they are intelligent. Now, the makers of this home-made movie cautioned the public that the clip contains some pretty icky scenes and images, so viewer’s discretion is advised. However, when was the miracle of birth short of graphic stuff?
So, what can someone see in the clip? Well, in the first couple of seconds, the public can see the mother-to-be female otter as she makes herself comfortable on a rock bed, waiting for the joyous moment.
After a couple of more seconds, the otter mom begins to squirm and to puff. This goes on for a few more seconds, and after that, the public can clearly see that pup’s head coming out of the female sea otter.
The mother would continue to push and to puff for a few more minutes, after realizing that the tactic is futile. And so, without further ado, the mother takes a hold of the pup’s head, using her mouth, and yanks out.
The staff is in awe and begins to applaud. After the hard part was over, the mother sea otter started to groom its offspring. One of the biologists working at the Monterey Bay Aquarium had the courtesy of providing a few explanation for the otter’s behavior.
He said that grooming is essential for the otter. First of all, he declared, the mother would groom its pup to remove the excess amniotic fluid. Grooming also provides buoyancy. The biologist explained that the mother continues to groom its offspring until he grows old enough to do this by himself.
In the first months of life, the mother must do this for her pup to ensure that does not drown. A well-groomed pup will shortly start eating away invertebrates, help the environment and to be adorable.
The video of the sea otter giving birth has become viral by proving that birth is still a miraculous event, regardless if it takes place among humans or animals.
