Dolphins are graceful and playful marine creatures. Researchers are worried because the Florida dolphins seem to be threatened. Recent events leads them to believe that they should increase their efforts in helping the animals.
No less than eight dolphins have been found on the shores of Florida. They were stranded, and animals’ health care authorities had to intervene immediately. Specialists believe that Hermine hurricane interfered with the animals route, and led them close to shore. Shallow waters prevented the animals from getting back to the ocean by themselves.
The Dolphins Plus Marine Mammal Responder has recently announced that they are doing their best with the rescue mission for the animals. They also talked about the health status of the already saved dolphins, in a press release. According to them, the marine creatures had severe burns on their bodies and suffered from dehydration. These are both signs of having spent too much time in the sun.
Saturday was a busy day for the people at the Marine Mammal Responder. Five of the Florida dolphins needed their help. Despite their efforts, one of them died. Another one is in a very critical condition, while two others needed further medical assistance.
Three of the spinner dolphins couldn’t be saved. The authorities decided that the best solution for them is to be euthanized. Their organisms were severely damaged by dehydration, and no other treatment could have cured them.
Only two of the eight stranded dolphins managed to survive. For the moment, they are at a specialized clinic.
Officials believe that more dolphins can be stranded, as the weather and waves can be unpredictable at times. They intend to perform aerial surveys in order to locate potential mammals in need. The Dolphins Plus Marine Mammal Responder will be working with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission in this mission.
All of the eight stranded dolphins were spinner dolphins. Scientifically called Stenella longirostris, spinner dolphins are among the smallest of their species, reaching less than two and a half meters. They are agile creatures, which can often be spotted in water parks. They are highly sociable beings and can be easily trained.
Both children and adults enjoy the company of dolphins. Swimming with dolphins was one of the most pleasant activities for Hawaii visitors. However, officials intend to ban this activity as they believe it affects the marine animals. It seems like the dolphins may be stressed and bothered by the human activities.
Although Hermine seems to be endangering the Florida dolphins, authorities intend to help the animals as much as they can.
