Wikipedia just announced that it released an improved version of the mobile app for iOS handsets.
Great news for all iOS users out there. No, Mac hasn’t won the computer master race. Instead, Wikipedia has just released a new version of ever popular platform for iOS handsets. According to Wiki, the new version of the app doesn’t only support the new Apple technologies but offers faster access to its core functions.
Recently, Wikipedia, probably the biggest online repository of knowledge, has just announced that it launched a new version of the mobile application. The new wiki update will target only iOS and Apple-related products.
Although the app was on the market for some time now, the application needed a couple of improvements. For instance, Wikipedia has been experimenting for quite a while now with off-line modes and with mobile editing.
The new version of the app will now allow users to write and post articles directly from their iOS devices. Furthermore, the update is more social media-friendly, meaning that users can opt to share fun facts with their friends and family.
As Wikipedia stated, the new update is focused more on personalization, than on functionality. Still, this doesn’t necessarily mean that the Wiki didn’t enhance some of the old features.
Regarding customization, Wiki announced that the mobile platform is now more attune to the reader’s needs, meaning that the platform will feature built-in algorithms that will analyze the user’s preference to recommend similar articles.
Moreover, the updated iOS app will also feature daily pictures, feeds and random articles, all of them based on the user’s previous searches.
Now, functionality wise, Wikipedia has a couple of surprises in store for us. First of all, the core functions of the mobile app have been updating as to be compatible with the latest version of iOS. Second, Wiki found a way for the user to access the new technologies developed by Apple such as 3D touch and Handoff.
By using the 3D touch feature, the user will be able to perform quick searches on Wikipedia, read random headlines or even to resume a previous lecture.
As far as the Handoff feature is concerned, this is where things become interesting. According to Wiki, this feature will now allow users to access primary phone or device feature like contact list or to message without having to exit from the application or to switch to their home screen.
Moreover, the Handoff feature will also help users pick up their reading after switching their devices, meaning that a reader can stream the same article or articles from an iPhone, Mac or iPad.
To get your hands on the new version of the app, head on over to the Apple Store and tap on the “Update” button.
