Recent news revealed that famous actor and medical marijuana supporter Woody Harrelson plans to grow weed in Hawaii.
Several companies in Hawaii apply for licenses to be able to grow and sell medical marijuana. Apparently, Academy Award winner Woody Harrelson was among the applicants.
He filed this request with his own company, Simple Organic Living. It’s a known fact that the Aloha State has allowed individuals with medical problems to cultivate their own medical cannabis for almost 15 years now. However, dispensaries were given permission to sell medical cannabis only last summer.
The companies which applied for licenses filed their requests in January. The beneficiaries will be announced by the State Department for Health in April. Reports show eight licenses were filed by companies in Aloha state, which makes the competition really tough.
In Oahu, there were 32 companies which requested only three licenses. In Kauai there were five applications, but only for one license. Moreover, in Maui there were fifteen companies which submitted their application for two licenses. Also, requests were registered for Big Island, where 14 companies applied for two licenses.
The head of the Department of Health Office and Health Care Assurance said that further information about the competitors will not be made public. Woody Harrelson, famous for his movies and HBO series, True Detective, along with his wife submitted their request in Maui.
Woody Harrelson made this possible with the help of his company, Simple Organic Living, which was authorized in September, 2015. However, Harrelson is not the only famous figure to make public his intention to grow marijuana. Further news revealed that on the competitors list Henk Rogers and Dirk Fukushima also made an appearance.
Rogers is a video game entrepreneur famous for his Tetris game. He also applied under his own company, Blue Planet Foundation. His company is known for advocating for energy freedom in the state. Dirk Fukushima is the producer of the television series Hawaii Stars.
The dispensaries these companies intend to open will need a large amount of money in order to see pertinent results. If they are selected, competitors will need 1$ million dollars before they get the license. Also, they will need $100,000 for every dispensary location.
The opening date will be in July. Hawaii was the first state in which medical marijuana was legalized. The fact that Woody Harrelson plans to grow weed in Hawaii might give another perspective for other states as well.
